Caught My First Fish
Thursday, May 7th, 2009I went out last week fishing for the first time ever. We went out with Tony, owner of BC Sportfishing Group, located in Harrison Hot Springs. That day I caught my first sturgeon, weighing approx 175-200 pounds, length just under 7 feet. What a fight, with these bottom feeders they like to play with you until your arms feel like jelly. But what a exhilarating feeling of finally bringing him to the surface. As the white sturgeon are protected in the Fraser River, they are catch and release only. With a beach close by we where able to get into the water and take our pictures, being careful not to cause too much stress or harm to the sturgeon. Tony and his guides belong to a group of people called the Fraser River Sturgeon conservation Society, that are helping to learn more about these magnificent creatures. They check each fish for a tag that documents where it has been, how many times its’ been caught, size etc. Out of the three sturgeon we caught that day, two of them had never been tagged. So it was interesting to watch what is being done to protect these prehistoric animals. The sturgeon is dated back to before the dinosaurs and can live well over a 100 years. They are not the prettiest fish out there but they diffently know how to adapt to the changeing world around them. If you ever get a chance to experience a fishing trip like no other check out Tony and his team of excellant guides. They will take you out on a trip to remember. Keep your eyes open for seals, osprey, and eagles that also call Harrison and the Fraser River home. www.bcsportfishinggroup.com
